The Navy has top-quality sports facilities, available to all personnel, on the Devonport Naval Base. The facilities are used by individuals and teams, and some are used by the local community and families of personnel.
Ngataringa Sports Complex
The main site for sports is the Naval Sport Complex, located on land reclaimed from Ngataringa Bay on the northern side of the Stanley Point peninsula adjacent to both the RNZN's Damage Control School and the RNZN Marae.
The Ngataringa Bay Sports Field has a fitness trail and 2 cricket nets. It accommodates Rugby Union, Rugby League, Soccer, Touch and Cricket teams.
There are three gymnasiums available for personnel to use, all in convenient locations around the Base. The Fleet Gym has a large weights room and runs lunchtime classes including Kebo and Pump.
There are six tennis courts and four netball courts available on base. Many personnel take advantage of these during lunch hours or by joining one of the many Navy sports clubs.
Fleet Swimming Pool
The base has a six lane, 33 metre heated out-door swimming pool. Pool activities include Navy training in Sea Survival, Navy Diver Unit training, water sports, fitness and recreation.
The Navy's Operational Dive Team complete some of their fitness qualifications here every six months. They are required to complete 12 laps in 8 minutes 30 seconds.
The pool hosts the Navy Waterpolo Club and Inter-Service waterpolo events and the annual Base swimming sports day.
The Devonport Swimming Club uses the pool in the morning and evening, and local schools use the pool by arrangement. At the weekend Naval personnel and their families have access for recreational use.
