RNZN Chaplains are ordained priests/ministers employed by the Navy to provide both spiritual guidance and pastoral care to all Naval personnel, military and civilian, and their families.
Our Chaplains are trained in 'first-aid' counselling, and can advise on referrals to other professional agencies. They can also assist with both personal and service related problems and issues and they are committed to working confidentially with all personnel.
At times chaplains are posted aboard Naval vessels and on Peacekeeping operations. Any person can arrange to see a chaplain in the office at the Naval Base during work hours. However, in times of crisis, illness or bereavement, Chaplains will also visit service personnel, or their family members, in hospital or at home.
In an emergency, or in the event of a crisis, the Chaplains are available outside working hours (including weekends).
Serving and Ex Serving personnel, both military and civilian, may use the Naval Chapels for Baptisms, Weddings, Funerals and other special occasions. Enquires need to be made through the Chaplaincy Centre.
Right: in the Naval Memorial Chapel of St Christopher the frame of the central window over the altar is made from the steering wheel of HMS PHILOMEL. Around the rim are the names of New Zealand ships/units that suffered losses in World War II. A window on either side depicts St Brandon, Patron Saint of Navigators and St Christopher, Patron Saint of Travellers.
