Naval Community Organisation

Staff of the Navy Community Organisation

When a ship is away from Devonport for months at a time the partners and other family members back home do not have to fend for themselves if problems arise; The Naval Community Organisation is there to help.

Right: Staff of the Naval Community Organisation

The Naval Community Organisation brings together the functions that contribute towards the wellbeing of the naval community.  In this context the naval community is considered to include all service members, their families, naval civilian employees, reservists and, sometimes the local Devonport community.

Each month the Naval Community Organisation produces an electronic newsletter called the Community Connection.  The Navy Help Line (0800 NAVY HELP) is an information service that friends and family can use to contact the organisation, make social worker and family liaison officer appointments and find out up to date information on the ships.

Anybody wishing to receive the Community Connection should send their details to the NCO using the contact page or phone 0800 NAVYHELP or 09-445 5915.

Social Workers and Family Liaison Officer

The Naval Community Organisation has a Family Liaison Officer who can arrange help with matters such as childcare, home help and liaising with Plunket, schools and other outside organisations. It has two Social Workers who as well as being available in normal business hours provide a 24-hour emergency service.

Navy Childcare

The NCO also has a link to the Navy Childcare Centre which is managed by an Incorporated Society.

Information and Events

The Naval Community Organisation runs an information service for all Navy personnel, their families and civilian staff employed by Navy, anywhere in New Zealand, 24 hours a day, 7 days per week.

Phones are staffed between 8 am and 4 pm New Zealand time from Monday to Friday. Outside these hours the telephone messaging system will provide the latest known information on the movements of Naval ships.

A general notice board will carry details of current Naval community events and details of the Duty Social Worker cell phone number for use in emergencies outside of normal working hours.

Contacting the NCO

The organisation has its own NCO Facebook Page  where notices of events are posted. Notices are also posted around the base.
