Chief of Navy

Rear Admiral John Martin, ONZM

The Chief of Navy (CN), is the Royal New Zealand Navy's professional head and Chairman of the Navy Leadership Board. He is responsible to the Chief of Defence Force (CDF) for the effectiveness, efficiency and morale of the Navy. He supports the CDF in the management and direction of the New Zealand Defence Force.

  • Is the most senior officer in the Royal New Zealand Navy
  • Holds the rank of Rear Admiral
  • Responsibility is to raise, train and maintain the Navy in order that it meets the goals set by the Chief of Defence Force and the New Zealand government.
  • Is the principal advisor to the Chief of Defence Force on Naval matters

Warrant Officer of the Navy

Warrant Officer Wayne Dyke

The Warrant Officer of the Navy (WON) is the most senior sailor in the Navy and reports directly to the Chief of Navy as part of his personal staff.

The WON is responsible for:

  • Providing CN and senior leadership with advice about issues affecting sailors

The Deputy Chief of Navy (DCN) is responsible for the operation of the Naval Support Command, including Devonport Naval Base in Auckland and the Naval Staff in Wellington.

Maritime Component Commander

Commodore Jim Gilmour, RNZN

The Maritime Component Commander (MCC) commands the Navy’s Fleet of ships that regularly deploy overseas and around New Zealand to protect and support New Zealand’s interests. 

MCC is responsible to the Chief of Navy for the command and readiness of the Fleet and specialist teams to deliver on the Navy’s mission, outputs and outcomes.  This includes:

  • Capability generation, training, evaluation
  • All operational activities that the fleet undertake 
  • Additionally, he is responsible to the Commander Joint Forces New Zealand for the command and conduct of maritime operations and provision of the naval contribution to NZDF Outputs
