Ceremonial Welcome for Prime Minister of the Kingdom of Bahrain

Thursday 24 March, 2005

The Navy will provide a 50-person Guard of Honour and the Army will fire a 19 gun salute for the Prime Minister of the Kingdom of Bahrain, His Highness Sheikh Khalifa bin Salman Al Khalifa in a ceremonial welcome held on the forecourt of Parliament, Wellington at 10:30am Tuesday 29 March.

As the Navy Guard of Honour conducts a general salute at Parliament, the Army’s 16th Field Regiment will fire a 19 gun Prime Ministerial salute at Point Jerningham. The National Anthem of Bahrain will then be played by the Navy Band while the Bahrain flag is broken out at Parliament.

The welcome will begin with a warrior from the Maori Ceremonial Group offering a “Rakau Tapu”, a small branch or dart as a symbol of peace to Prime Minister His Highness Sheikh Al Khalifa. He and his party will be welcomed forward with a Karanga (call of welcome) and a hongi performed between the Kaumatua and the Prime Minister’s party before His Highness Sheikh Al Khalifa ascends the saluting base.
