Pacific Partnership 2009

On his first visit as Chief of Navy RADM Tony Parr used the occasion to brief HMNZS OLPHERT personnel on current developments. Here he sits with OLPHERT's officers and ratings. (WN-09-0096-016).

Pacific Partnership 2009 began when USNS Richard E. Byrd (T-AKE 4) berthed in Apia, Samoa on 1 July. Pacific Partnership is a US initiative which works with partner nations, non-governmental organizations and other US and international agencies to execute humanitarian and civic assistance missions.

The NZDF contribution this year includes Medics, for First Aid training, and Electricians, for work ashore; POMT (L) Richard Boyd is the RNZN representative.

This year’s mission is focused ashore with a variety of engineering, medical and dental and veterinary civic action programs for communities in Samoa, Tonga and Solomon Islands.

Richard E. Byrd arrived in Tonga on 13 July: following a period there, Pacific Partnership 09 will continue, with the Richard E. Byrd scheduled to visit New Caledonia before heading to the Solomon Islands.
