The rank of Midshipman is denoted by a white patch with a button in the centre. This is the rank given to Officers upon  joining the Royal New Zealand Navy and is generally held for two years. This rank differs from the Officer Cadet ranks in the Airforce and Army because Midshipmen are treated as Officers. At any given time there may be around 60 Midshipmen in the RNZN.
