"Senior Sailors – Making a Difference"

It was a great privilege for the Royal New Zealand Navy (RNZN) to host the Senior Sailors Symposium 07 (SSS07) in Auckland between the 13 -16 November 2007.

The theme of SSS07 is ‘Senior Sailors – Making a Difference’.  In my view, as a consequence of the status we hold as Senior Sailors of our Navies – and the many years that we have of organisational experience; responsibility is vested in us to be custodians of our Naval heritage, traditions and values.  We also have an obligation to realise the potential in other sailors.

This responsibility and this obligation together challenge us ‘To make a difference’.  Learning from others of their experiences in making a difference provides an invaluable way for us all to improve our ability to make a contribution to our Navies.

To strengthen collaboration and cooperation at the engine room level, we must work together through open communication and information sharing to better understand each others strengths and opportunities for improvement, which subsequently benefit our Navies.

SSS07 therefore provides a platform for us to share our experiences and discuss our ideas and to increase the level and intensity of cooperation  and facilitate the exchange of mutually beneficial views on various aspects of the contributions Senior Sailors make to their respective Navies.

SSS07 will provide invaluable opportunities for participants to explore new ways to realise the potential within the Senior Sailor ranks that can bring about positive benefits to the future development of our Navies.

We look forward very much to welcoming you to SSS07 in Auckland during November, to building bridges of friendship across the seas that normally separate us – and to giving us all new insights into how Senior Sailors can make a difference.
