Shore Establishment: HMNZS PHILOMEL is the Navy's main administrative naval base in Auckland. Originally New Zealand's first warship, HMS PHILOMEL formed the core of the country's naval forces during the First World War. Following a distinguished career through two World Wars and service as a training vessel, Philomel was decommissioned on 16 January 1947. The next day, following Admiralty approval to retain the name, the shore establishment HMNZS Philomel was commissioned.
