Following a magnitude 7.8 earthquake on 14 November 2016, HQ NZDF relocated from Freyberg House to Freyberg Building due to damage sustained in the earthquake.
From 1948 to 1953 the Navy Office in Wellington was known as HMNZS PHILOMEL II. On 1 January 1954 it was renamed HMNZS WAKEFIELD. The name was chosen because of the historical link between the Wakefield brothers, the New Zealand Company and the foundation of Wellington.
WAKEFIELD is home to the Chief of Navy and provides Command administration support. It covers the following:
- Naval Staff
- Deputy Chief of Navy
- Naval Services (Raise, Train & Sustain)
- Strategic Plans and Performance
