Navy Band to play free concert in Taihape

Navy Band to play free concert in Taihape

31 October 2011

The Navy Band will play a free lunchtime concert at the Town Clock in the main centre of Taihape at midday Friday 04 November 2011.

The Director of Music, Warrant Officer Shaun Jarrett, said the 20 person band would play a varied repertoire including concert band music and dixie swing.

"The band are talented and passionate musicians, and they're looking forward to visiting Ohakune and Taihape in support of the Ohakune Centenary celebrations."

"Our music caters to all tastes, so there's something for everyone.  We'll be playing numbers by a variety of artists ranging from Dave Dobbyn and Stevie Wonder to Bill Bailey and Chicago.”

The Navy Band's primary role is to support the ceremonial requirements of the Navy, including Royal, Vice Regal and State occasions. When not on the parade ground or supporting official ceremonies, the band supports local charities and community based organisations with concerts and other high profile performances.

Background

The Navy Band was formed in the early 1960’s from a nucleus of formal Royal Marines musicians who remained in New Zealand after the Royal Marines Band was recalled to the United Kingdom.  Over time the band has diversified to meet the changing needs of the public and a number of new groups have formed within the band including a big band, rock band, jazz combo, and brass group.
