Bombay School student Lily Webber has had the experience of a lifetime after she won a day with the Royal New Zealand Navy in Operation Anzac Spirit, a poster competition run by the New Zealand Defence Force as part of Anzac Day.
Lily’s poster was chosen from around 400 entries in Operation Anzac Spirit, a competition for Year 7 and 8 students which asked them to submit a poster showing what Anzac Day means to them.
During her day Lily fought fires, dined onboard an ANZAC Class Frigate, drove a ship simulator, encountered Auckland’s inner harbour in a Rigid Hull Inflatable Boat and topped it all off with a flight over Auckland in one of the Navy’s Seasprite helicopters.
"My favourite part was definitely the helicopter trip and the fire fighting. I had a great time."
Both of Lily’s grandfathers fought in WWII, and were the inspiration behind her pastel drawing of a young soldier. While experiencing her day in the Navy she thought a lot about what they would have done when serving their country.
For now though Lily is eagerly awaiting the question from her teachers and school friends, "what did you do on your holidays?"
