One hundred and fifty New Zealand Defence Force personnel will be joined by two American Marines on the streets of Wellington, lending their support to the annual Poppy Day collection on Thursday 17 April.

The Marines have a long association with Wellington, as they were stationed in camps in Wellington and the Kapiti Coast during WWII.

Funds collected will be used by the Returned and Services’ Association (RSA) for a variety of services including assistance for private surgery that is either not available through the public system or only possible after a long period on a waiting list.

RSA National President Don McIver said, "Poppy Day is our largest fundraiser of the year and allows us to continue to assist service and ex-service personnel and their families with our welfare support programme. We are immensely appreciative of all the assistance provided to us by the Defence Force, a valued partner of ours."

Nationwide the RSA expends in excess of $2 million annually on its welfare activities, more than half of which is generously donated by New Zealanders on Poppy Day.

In Wellington, volunteers from Veterans’ Affairs New Zealand, Sea Cadets and the Ministry of Defence will also assist with the collection.
