Navy returns for Art Deco Weekend

Chief of Navy Rear Admiral Ledson
Chief of Navy Rear Admiral David Ledson (WN07-0187-02)

18 February 2009

The Royal New Zealand Navy will again have a significant presence in Napier as Hawke’s Bay commemorates the 1931 earthquake and celebrates all that is Art Deco with the 2009 GEON Art Deco Weekend.

HMNZS RESOLUTION will be berthed at the Port of Napier from 18-23 February 2009 in support of the commemorations, as she has on seven previous occasions.

This year marks the ‘swan song’ for some key Navy players in recent years at Art Deco. Commander Murray Tuffin is in the region for his final Art Deco as Commanding Officer of HMNZS RESOLUTION before he relinquishes command of the ship on Friday 27 February.  Commander Tuffin will be succeeded by Lieutenant Commander Shane Arndell, RNZN.
Rear Admiral David Ledson will also be in attendance for his last Art Deco as Chief of Navy, as he retires from the position in April.

“Art Deco weekend is always a wonderful celebration and a reminder of the strong ties between the Royal New Zealand Navy and the Hawke’s Bay region,” says Rear Admiral Ledson.

“At the same time, as we reflect on the earthquake and consider the recent bushfires in Victoria we are reminded that natural events have and will continue to be a challenge for our communities - and in trying times it is often the case that communities and Defence Forces come together in a common cause.”

At the time the earthquake struck, HMS Veronica was alongside Napier and Royal New Zealand Navy personnel provided any assistance they could to the area.

The band of the Royal New Zealand Navy will lead the street parade on Saturday and perform a free concert in the Napier Sound Shell on Saturday evening.
