Former Northcote College student, and now Navy Steward, Able Steward (ASTD) Kassey-Jean Samuels, aged 19, won a silver medal in the restaurant service category at the 2014 National WorldSkills Competition held in Hamilton over the weekend.

The competition is New Zealand’s premier work-skill competition and can lead to competitors representing New Zealand in the ‘Tool Blacks’ team at the international WorldSkills competition held biannually.

ASTD Samuels undertook two full days of practical and theory assessments in the restaurant service category and will now go into the selection phase to represent New Zealand at the International World Skills competition in Sao Paulo, Brazil next year.

ASTD Samuels joined the Royal New Zealand Navy (RNZN) last year and is now based at Devonport Naval Base as a Steward.

“My day-to-day job involves serving patrons at the base’s galley and working at functions” said ASTD Samuels.

ASTD Samuels has already competed in three competitions since joining the Navy only one year ago. “This year I competed at the Wellington Culinary Fare and also the Roy Smith competition where I was selected as part of the NZDF Torque O’ Dor team,” said ASTD Samuels.

ASTD Samuels enjoys training and learning about the industry as well as competing.

“My confidence has grown a lot since being in the RNZN, I’m always stepping out of my comfort zone,” ASTD Samuels said.
