Lieutenant General Tim Keating is New Zealand's new Defence Chief

Lieutenant General Rhys Jones, assisted by his wife Debbie and Wing Commander Charlie Morris, lays a wreath at the War Memorial in Wellington in his last act as the Chief of Defence Force. Lt Gen Jones is retiring after a distinguished 35-year career that included operational duty in the Middle East as part of the United Nations Truce Supervision Organisation. He authored the NZDF’s Future35 strategy, which envisions an agile and integrated armed forces that can mount a medium-scale amphibious operation in New Zealand or the Southwest Pacific by 2035. During his tenure as CDF, Lt Gen Jones presided over the drawdown of New Zealand’s commitments in Afghanistan, the Solomon Islands and Timor-Leste, and the deployment of NZDF personnel on humanitarian assistance and disaster relief operations in Christchurch, the South Pacific and the Philippines.
