Whitianga Sailor Represents Navy in South Pacific
Sub Lieutenant Evan Kaska in Apia.
8 June 2012
Royal New Zealand Navy (RNZN) Sub Lieutenant Evan Kaska, from Whitianga, is the Assistant Supply Officer on board the HMNZS OTAGO for a three month tour of the South Pacific.
OTAGO stopped in Samoa on 31 May 2012 for the 50th Anniversary of Independence Celebrations, where Evan joined personnel from the Royal New Zealand Navy Band, and the Royal New Zealand Air Force in a parade and march past as part of the 1 June event.
Evan has been in the Navy for seven years, and says being a part of the Independence Anniversary parade was a great experience but the heat provided some challenges.
“It was so hot, and we stood there for hours. It was the hardest parade I’ve ever been a part of. I definitely felt proud though, representing New Zealand and the Navy on such an important occasion. There was also a lot of pride and emotion from the Samoan people. It was a great experience being a part of that special day.”
Evan attended Mercury Bay Area School, and decided to join the Navy for the travel and the people. He has previously deployed on land-based missions with the Defence Force to Timor-Leste and Antarctica. He has only been on OTAGO for five weeks, and is looking forward to the rest of his tour around the South Pacific.
“I’m really interested in seeing Rarotonga, and doing some diving and fishing on our down time.”
