The Royal New Zealand Navy (RNZN) supported the Wellington City Mission today with the ‘Fish and Ships’ event, a fish and chip lunch onboard HMNZS CANTERBURY berthed at Queens Wharf, Wellington.

The 300 guests enjoyed a fish and chip lunch with entertainment from an element of the RNZN band. There was also an onboard ‘foodie auction’ in support of the Wellington City Mission.

Chief of Navy, Rear Admiral Jack Steer said the Navy was delighted to support Wellington City Mission.  “The Navy and HMNZS CANTERBURY are often involved in humanitarian and disaster relief operations overseas, so it’s great to share our ship to support the local community and raise money for the Wellington City Mission’s vital community work.”

All proceeds from the event will go to the Wellington City Mission in order for them to continue working with the community across their four main service sectors - Mission for Families, Independence, Youth and Seniors.

Wellington City Missioner, Reverend Tric Malcolm said “Fish and Ships is my first major fundraiser as the City Missioner, and all of the local support and buzz generated around it has been really wonderful to see.”

HMNZS CANTERBURY has been involved in humanitarian and relief operations in the Pacific Islands, and provided relief and support for residents of Christchurch and Lyttelton after the February 2011 earthquake. Her next deployment will involve participation in the bi-annual Exercise RIMPAC.

HMNZS CANTERBURY is the Navy’s Sealift and Amphibious Support Vessel, and provides the NZ Defence Force with the ability to transport and deploy personnel, vehicles and supplies near and far. The ship has a fully equipped medical operating theatre and can accommodate up to 250 embarked personnel on deployment in addition to her regular crew.
