4 May 2010

The Royal New Zealand Navy’s premier rugby team will play Rugby India (India’s national rugby team) in a one off clash at Ngataringa Bay Sports Complex at 2:00pm on 5 May 2010.

What: A rugby game between the Navy’s premier rugby team and Rugby India.

When: Wednesday 5 May 2010 at 2:00pm

Where: Ngataringa Bay Sports Complex, Jim Titchener Parade, Devonport, North Shore

Background

In August 2008 HMNZS TE MANA visited Mumbai, India and built a rugby relationship by members of the ships crew playing the Indian national squad. Rugby India is in New Zealand to attend a New Zealand Rugby Academy training camp and will have rematch against the Navy on New Zealand soil.

Rugby India is ranked 84th in the world (as of 18 April 2010 IRB Rankings), out of 95 teams. Their captain is Nasser Hussain, nicknamed "Nino" and they are currently being coached by South Africans Norman Laker and Henry Marnitz. There are, in total, 17,200 registered rugby players in India.

They were admitted to the IRB in 2001, but it took three years before India managed to win a match - beating Pakistan 56-3 in the third tier competition of the Asian Biennial tournament.
