Nelson local Ensign (ENS) Zoe Moulam was one of 12 new officers who graduated from the New Zealand Cadet Force (NZCF) Officer Commission Course on 26 May 2012.
New Zealand Cadet Force and NZ Defence Force staff attended the graduation ceremony at RNZAF Base Ohakea.
Having been a part of the NZCF since 2010, ENS Moulam joined as a direct entrant officer in order to contribute to the community and go sailing when she moved to Nelson from England with her husband.
Course Director Squadron Leader Bruce Sinclair says the course is designed to teach and test to produce the very best officers.
"Around 25 percent of students have come up through the ranks and are on the course to give something back to the organisation which has given them so much. The course reinforces our core values of discipline, respect, integrity and loyalty in a supportive but challenging environment."
ENS Moulam says the hardest part of the course for me was adapting to life on a military base with all its protocols and routines.
"But despite this, taking part in the exercises in the forest on assessment day, where everything we had been taught came together in practice, made up for it all. It was also great to meet other officers to share experiences and learn from them, and get new ideas to take back to my own unit."
Outside of the NZCF she works as an Environmental Health Officer for Tasman District Council.
ENS Moulam says that the Cadet Forces has allowed her to develop friends and community links and she loves Nelson as it has the sea for sailing, hills for mountain biking and great tracks for tramping. Her best experience of Cadet Forces was sailing back from New Caledonia to Nelson at the end of a cadet voyage in 2010.
Following the course, the newly commissioned ENS Moulam will return to her unit TS TALISMAN and take up the role of Training Officer, organising the yearly training program for the whole unit.
She says to adults that are thinking of joining, "give it a go, give something back to the community and help develop our youth into the people we want in our society in the next 10 years."
