When Emily Trengrove entered the Defence Force Anzac Day art competition Operation Anzac Forces, she never thought she would be a prize winner and earn a trip with the Royal New Zealand Navy.

“I couldn’t believe it, I was so excited, it took a while to sink in. I doubted that I would place since the competition was nation-wide so I was thrilled when they rang me,” said Emily (12), a student from St Joseph’s School.

Operation Anzac Forces art competition was run as part of Anzac Day for Years 7 and 8 students throughout the country. The competition, which aimed to raise awareness of Anzac Day, required students to design a poster showing Defence Force personnel working overseas.

The prize Emily received was an overnight trip on the Navy’s Offshore Patrol Vessel HMNZS OTAGO. Emily and her mother Diane Trengrove joined OTAGO in Bluff and sailed to Stewart Island as part of the ship’s inaugural visits to its affiliated regions Otago and Southland.

When asked what her favourite part of the trip was Emily said “I really enjoyed the whole trip, it was so exciting, I can’t single one part out, I had so many great experiences. I can’t imagine doing some of the things I did on my trip anywhere else, like going to Stewart Island for the first time.”
