“It is indeed my honour and privilege to lead this fine organisation,” Lieutenant General Tim Keating said this afternoon after he officially took over as the new Chief of Defence Force at a ceremony at Government House in Wellington. Lt Gen Keating is the first Army officer cadet who completed initial officer training in New Zealand to lead the Defence Force. He has been appointed the new Chief of Defence Force for three years.

Lieutenant General Timothy (Tim) James Keating, a highly experienced former Special Forces commander, today assumed command of the 13,000-strong New Zealand Defence Force (NZDF).
During a ceremony at Government House in Wellington, the Governor-General, Lt Gen the Right Honourable Sir Jerry Mateparae, presented Tim Keating with his warrant and promotion to Lieutenant General. Lt Gen Keating’s wife Brenda then helped him put on a jacket with his new rank slides to mark that he had officially taken over as the new Chief of Defence Force.
“It is indeed my honour and privilege to lead this fine organisation,” Lt Gen Keating told guests, which included senior members of the NZDF, Chief Executives from other government departments and members of his family.
The ceremony also included a formal send-off for Lt Gen Rhys Jones, who is retiring after a distinguished 35-year career.
Warrant Officer Class 1 Danniel Broughton was also appointed Warrant Officer of the NZDF, the most senior non-commissioned appointment in the NZDF. He will be a key advisor to Lt Gen Keating.
“In this role as Chief of Defence Force, I have a distinct responsibility both to the Government of New Zealand and those who serve in the ranks of the Defence Force,” Lt Gen Keating said.
“When the Defence Force is deployed, the advice I give will in all likelihood put young New Zealanders in harm’s way. Therefore the cause must be just, which is a decision for Government, and the plan and its execution must be professional, which is my prime responsibility.”
Lt Gen Keating has been appointed the new Chief of Defence Force for three years. He was the Vice Chief of Defence Force before he was selected in late 2013 to succeed Lt Gen Jones. He is the first Army officer cadet who completed initial officer training in New Zealand to lead the Defence Force. In October 1997, Lt Gen Keating was posted on promotion as the Commanding Officer of the New Zealand contingent in the Sinai Peninsula. He was a former Commanding Officer of 1st New Zealand Special Air Service and the Commanding Officer of CRIB 6, a 100-strong contingent deployed to support international reconstruction efforts in Afghanistan from July to December 2005. He served as the Chief of Army from February 2011 to November 2012.
