Final Entry to Auckland Harbour - Navy Ship Decommissions

Commanding Officer of HMNZS RESOLUTION, Lieutenant Commander Matt Wray, is preparing the ship for her final entry in to Auckland Harbour

On Tuesday 24 April media are invited to join HMNZS RESOLUTION as she sails in to Auckland for the final time as a commissioned Royal New Zealand Navy ship. RESOLUTION will be returning to Devonport Naval Base from Gisborne in preparation for her ceremonial decommissioning on Friday 27 April.

During her historic voyage into Auckland Harbour and the Naval Base, media are able to join the Commanding Officer, Lieutenant Commander Matthew Wray, on the ship as he conducts her final duty as an RNZN ship. As she sails in to the harbour RESOLUTION will also be flying her 14 metre decommissioning pennant flag from the mast head.

"It is a proud time for RESOLUTION’s Ship’s Company as she prepares to decommission," says Lieutenant Commander Wray.

"Being able to assist in recent activities such as the search for FV Easy Rider, and surveying Lyttleton Harbour after the February 2011 earthquake has highlighted the significant contribution this ship has made to New Zealand during her service."

Lieutenant Commander Wray has filled various positions as part of the Ship’s Company over the years and was appointed as the Commanding Officer in 2010.

Since commissioning RESOLUTION has steamed over 300,000 nautical miles or nearly 14 times around the circumference of the world. She has also spent over 42,000 hours or nearly four years at sea. RESOLUTION has visited 40 different ports in 12 different countries. The ship's survey capabilities will be transferred to another RNZN vessel following her decommissioning.
