The NZDF has an increasing number of international commitments. As a consequence the Regular Force component of the Navy will remain heavily committed to operations overseas. This level of commitment is only achievable through the support of the Naval Reserve. The commitment to the Naval Reserve can cause conflict between a member's civilian career and Naval Reserve activities and Military duties tend to come second place to what is essentially the primary income source.
While civilian employment must be the priority, employers and NZDF are working together to help accommodate each other's needs. The civilian employer emerges with happier employees who possess special skills and experience and the Navy gains available trained personnel. The contribution of employer support initiatives to operational effectiveness is crucial to the ability of the RNZN to sustain its commitments.
