HMNZS NGAPONA

NGAPONA crest

Welcome to HMNZS NGAPONA.

The name NGAPONA is taken from a Maori proverb relating to the three peaks of Rangitoto, a prominent island in Auckland's Hauraki Gulf. The ship's badge denotes the Kaka, a native bird that was originally found on Rangitoto.

Ship's Motto: 'We serve together'

HMNZS NGAPONA Tauranga Unit was established in 1989 as Tauranga Port HQ. In 2007, the Unit was reconfigured as a Sub Unit of Auckland’s RNZNVR Division, HMNZS NGAPONA. Situated within the Port of Tauranga, the Unit’s location is ideally suited to Maritime Trade Organisation (MTO) training, the branch to which the majority of its personnel belong. Other personnel at the unit include Seaman or Technical specialists.
