Lieutenant Commander A (Andrew) WILSON RNZNVR
Lieutenant Commander Andrew Wilson was born in Gisborne. He joined the Royal New Zealand Naval Volunteer Reserve at HMNZS NGAPONA in July 2004 as a direct entry officer and is currently employed in the Maritime Trade Operations (MTO) Branch.
In his civilian career Lieutenant Commander Wilson has held a number of positions including National Operations Manager for a logistics and shipping company. Currently he is employed by the Security and Operations Division of the Port of Tauranga Ltd. His knowledge of the mercantile shipping industry has, and continues to be, of considerable value to the MTO Branch and his peers.
After completing Junior Officers Common Training in 2004 he completed the MTO introductory courses in Auckland. Consolidating his MTO knowledge by working a number of rotations as Duty Shipping Officer at Headquarters Joint Forces New Zealand he went on to manage the white shipping operational picture for a seven month period during 2008.
In 2010 Lieutenant Commander Wilson was selected to support the United Nations Mission in Sudan and South Sudan as a Military Observer.
In 2011 LTCDR Wilson was posted to attend the MARSEC Practitioner Course held at the RSN Base in Changi.
In October 2011 he was seconded by the Regional Harbourmaster to act as Liaison Officer to the Salvage Team when the container vessel RENA struck rocks off the Bay of Plenty Coast.
In 2012 Lieutenant Commander Wilson was selected to be the last New Zealand Officer to post to the United Nations Mission in Timor-Leste before the Mission draw down.
As well as serving as a Peacekeeper for the United Nations, Lieutenant Commander Wilson has also posted to Exercise BERSAMA PADU in Malaysia on the staff of the Operational Commander in the Joint and Combined Headquarters in Malaysia, and recently onboard HMNZS CANTERBURY as part of Exercise SOUTHERN KATIPO.
As well as working for the Port of Tauranga Ltd, Lieutenant Commander Wilson is a Director of his own shipping agency.
He is married to Clare and has two pre teen children. In his spare time he is either providing a taxi service to his two busy children, or will be walking up Mauao or surfing.
