December 2012: DUNEDIN WOMAN CHOOSES NAVY FOR A DIFFERENT LIFE

Reservist SLT Pooley

For Dunedin nutritionist and Naval Reserve Sub Lieutenant (SLT) Margaret Pooley, time away from home to participate in the annual Naval Reserve exercise is just the kind of respite she needs to keep her military training current.

As a part-time member of the Naval Volunteer Reserve, the recent exercise in Devonport, Auckland gave her the opportunity to practice for a joint exercise that will be hosted by the Royal New Zealand Navy next year.

SLT Pooley joined the Naval Reserve in 1998 to advance her learning, do something outdoors and get active.

Away from the Navy, she is an 46-year-old university qualified wife, mother and Nutrimetics Consultant.

SLT Pooley says the Navy has given her experiences not available anywhere else.

"My stand out deployment to date was a two week trip on the former Inshore Patrol Craft, HMNZS MOA with Customs and DOC.

"We sailed to Stewart Island, around Puysegur point and up into every fjord to Milford Sound and back. The trip also included a behind the scenes look at the Manapouri power plant, eating lots of Stewart Island seafood, stepping ashore at Astronomers' Point where Captain Cook landed in 1773 and walking to the observation site."

To others thinking about joining the Naval Reserve SLT Pooley says just go for it.

"Where else can you train, have fun, meet other people, have activities organized for you, keep fit and fly around the country to work or train and get paid for it?"
