Commander J.B (Bryan) Shankland VRD RNZNVR

Commander Bryan Shankland joined the Royal New Zealand Navy as a Junior Seaman in January 1965 after completing his schooling at Christchurch Boys’ High School.


After initial training at HMNZS TAMAKI and Sea-training on the Loch Class Frigate HMNZS ROTOITI he was posted to the Coastal Minesweeper HMNZS HICKLETON on active service in the Singapore/Malaysia area in September 1965.


Following this period of service he returned to New Zealand for further training and sea postings that included HMNZ Ships TARANAKI, INVERELL, and WAIKATO. He was promoted to Petty Officer in 1972 and following further training and service was posted to HMNZS TARANAKI and then to a second HMNZS ROTOITI, a Lake Class Patrol Vessel, as coxswain for 3 years. During this time he was promoted to Chief Petty Officer. He also served on HMNZS CANTERBURY as Senior RP on deployment in the Indian Ocean in 1982-1983. Shore postings as a Senior Rating included two periods as Commodore’s Coxswain in Auckland, Boats Chief Petty Officer at HMNZS TAMAKI, running the TAMAKI Boatyard, and as NTCI attached to HMNZS PEGASUS.


In 1986 Bryan left the RNZN and transferred to the RNZNVR as a Seaman Officer. He was promoted to Lieutenant in January 1987, awarded his Minor War Vessel Command in 1989, and promoted to Lieutenant Commander in 1993. He was Executive Officer of PEGASUS 1994-1998. Bryan attended Staff Courses in Australia and Canada. In January 2000 he was promoted Commander and appointed Commanding Officer HMNZS PEGASUS serving in this position until January 2004.


Bryan continued serving in the RNZNVR remaining an IPC Officer in Command until June 2006. He was the final RNZNVR officer in Command of HMNZS Kiwi returning the ship to Auckland in 2006.


Bryan holds the RNZN Long Service and Good Conduct Medal, The Volunteer Reserve Decoration, The Operational Service Medal and a number of Campaign Medals and Clasps.


In Civilian Life he is employed by The Lyttelton Port Company as a Pilot-Launch Master and relieving Tug Master.


Married to Irene and living in Lyttelton they have two adult children and three grand children.
