Commander D.G Jensen, VRD** RNZNVR
Commanding Officer HMNZS TOROA 1998 - 2006

Commander D.G (David) Jensen, VRD** RNZNVR

Commander David Jensen, joined the RNZNVR at HMNZS PEGASUS in Christchurch on 4 March 1968 as an Ordinary Seaman and retired at HMNZS TOROA  in Dunedin on 4 July 2006.

In his civilian career he was a Barrister and Solicitor. He was married with three children.

From a seafaring background and brought up on the seagoing stories of his forebears he joined the RNZNVR in search of adventure.

As an Ordinary Seaman and later as a Sea Service Officer he spent much of his time on Seaward Defence Motor Launches on the East Coast of New Zealand, and also spent short training periods on the frigates HMNZS BLACKPOOL and HMNZS CANTERBURY and on the survey vessel HMNZS LACHLAN. He obtained his RNZNVR Minor Vessel Bridge Watch keeping Certificate.

He later transferred to the Supply Branch and then joined the Shipping Control Branch when it was established, still spending periods at sea on SDMLs and the Inshore Patrol Craft HMNZS MOA.

As a Shipping Control Officer he participated in numerous national and international exercises including periods in Australia, Fiji and Canada.

He was appointed Commanding Officer of HMNZS TOROA from 6 June 1998 to 28 June 2006 and for a period was an Honorary Vice regal ADC.

On retirement he stated that he had been privileged to serve with many fine people and that he had certainly found adventure aplenty.
