Commander M.J. (Mike) Goldsworthy RNZNVR


Commander Mike Goldsworthy was born in Castor Bay, Auckland, and was raised in Dunedin and Christchurch. He completed his secondary education at Shirley Boys High School in Christchurch.


In January 1974, at the age of 16, Commander Goldsworthy joined the Royal New Zealand Navy (RNZN) as a Marine Engineering Artificer Apprentice. He was promoted Petty Officer in 1980 and Chief Petty Officer in 1982, having served in HMNZ Ships MONOWAI, OTAGO and TARANAKI.


In 1985 Commander Goldsworthy was commissioned from the ranks and promoted to Sub Lieutenant. After completing Naval general training in NZ and Marine Engineer Officer professional training at the Royal Naval Engineering College in the UK, he was posted to sea to complete his Engineer Officer training. Subsequently he served in HMNZ Ships WELLINGTON and WAIKATO, and was awarded his Marine Engineer Officer Charge Qualification in 1988.


Commander Goldsworthy, then a Lieutenant, held the positions of Deputy Director Naval Engineering Plans and Deputy Director Marine Engineering during a posting to Naval Headquarters in Wellington from1988 to 1990. His final sea posting in the RNZN was as Marine Engineer Officer in HMNZS CANTERBURY, from 1990 to 1992. Then he was posted ashore as the RNZN's Fleet Maintenance Management Officer and in July 1992 he was promoted to Lieutenant Commander.


Commander Goldsworthy left the RNZN in July 1994 to pursue a civilian career in the hospitality industry. He transferred to the Royal New Zealand Naval Reserve (RNZNVR), joining HMNZS PEGASUS, the RNZNVR Headquarters of the Canterbury Division. He has held the positions of Engineer Officer and Executive Officer in HMNZS PEGASUS from 1994 to 2002.


On leaving the RNZN in 1994, Commander Goldsworthy accepted a position as Chief Engineer at what was then named the Parkroyal Hotel in Christchurch. Commander Goldsworthy left the hospitality industry in 2002 and joined Meridian Energy Ltd.


Commander Goldsworthy was promoted to Commander, RNZNVR, and posted as the Commanding Officer of HMNZS PEGASUS in January 2004.  He was appointed Director Naval Reserve Support in November 2007 and is a member of the Naval Reserves  Advisory Board. 


Commander Goldsworthy and his wife Kaylene have two adult daughters, and live in North Canterbury.
