Commanding Officer Ngapona: 2005 - 2009
Commander R.P (Rod) Thomas VRD*, RNZNVR
Commander Rod Thomas joined the RNZNVR in 1981 as an Ordinary Seaman. He was commissioned ENSIGN in 1985 as a Supply Officer.
From that time he served as Captain Secretary, Supply Officer, Divisional Training Officer, being appointed Executive Officer of the Division in 2000 at the rank of LIEUTENANT COMMANDER. In 2005 he was promoted COMMANDER and appointed as commanding officer of HMNZS NGAPONA. He served in this role for a term of four years.
As commanding officer, COMMANDER Thomas oversaw the move of NGAPONA from its St Mary Bay location to its present site within the Devonport Naval Base.
During his time with NGAPONA, COMMANDER THOMAS served on HMNZS PAEA, KOURA, WAKAKURA, OTAGO, KIWI and HINAU.
He is a graduate of the Canadian Reserve Forces Staff College, Toronto. He is also the first Reserve Officer to be awarded a Reserve Supply Officer Charge Certificate.
COMMANDER Thomas was born in Northern Rhodesia (now Zambia) and is a graduate of Auckland University and Melbourne University, holding degrees of BA/LLB, LLM (Hons), Auckland and an LLM from Melbourne University.
He is presently a lecturer at the Faculty of Law at AUT University and a barrister at law at the Auckland bar. He continues to serve in the RNZNVR.
