Commander R.M (Roger) Havell, VRD, RNZNVR

Commander Roger Havell was born in Waiouru and attended St Joseph's College, Masterton, and Lincoln High School, Christchurch. He graduated from Victoria University, Wellington, with a Bachelor of Commercial Art in 1984, and became a member of the Institute of Chartered Accountants in 1987. He completed the International Institute of Internal Auditors professional examinations in 2006 and is a Certified Internal Auditor, CIA.  

Commander Havell joined the Royal New Zealand Naval Reserve at HMNZS PEGASUS in Christchurch as a Temporary Lieutenant in the Supply and Secretariat specialisation in 1991. He transferred to HMNZS OLPHERT in 1993 and assumed responsibilities for Head of Finance and Administration Branch. Following completion of his qualifications he was promoted to substantive Lieutenant in 1997. In January 1999, he was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant Commander following the completion of further courses and the restructure of the Supply and Secretariat Branch.

He was appointed Executive Officer of HMNZS OLPHERT in February 2002. Following the early retirement of CO OLPHERT in 2004, he was appointed Commanding Officer of HMNZS OLPHERT for the period of January to May 2004. Afterwards he resumed his Executive Officer duties.  In July 2005 he was promoted to Commander and appointed Commanding Officer of HMNZS OLPHERT.

Commander Havell was the Commanding Officer of HMNZS OLPHERT from July 2005 to August 2008.

In 2006 he was awarded the Volunteer Reserve Decoration, VRD.

He has served on HMNZ Ships WAKAKURA and KIWI.

Commander Havell is employed by the NZDF as a senior Internal Audit Manager, and has undertaken audit assignments in Darwin, East Timor, Honiara and TG CRIB Afghanistan in support of overseas deployments, for which he received the NZOSM, East Timor and primary Afghanistan medals.
