Lieutenant Commander B.D (Bruce) Walker, VRD, RNZNVR
Lieutenant Commander Walker joined the Supply and Secretariat branch of the Royal New Zealand Navy in May 1967 as a Probationary Stores Assistant.
He served in the Naval Shore Establishments TAMAKI, PHILOMEL and TASMAN and at sea in HMNZ Ships TARANAKI, LACHLAN and OTAGO. When he left the RNZN in 1976 he held the rank of Chief Petty Officer Stores Accountant.
Returning to his home city of Dunedin, Lieutenant Commander Walker immediately joined the Royal New Zealand Naval Volunteer Reserve as a Chief Petty Officer Support Services Rating.
In 1998 the rank of Warrant Officer was introduced into the RNZNVR and Lieutenant Commander Walker was one of the first of four to be promoted. As a Warrant Officer he was appointed as Whole Ship Co-ordinator and Training Officer of HMNZS TOROA.
In July 2000 he was commissioned from the ranks as a Sub Lieutenant and on completion of Junior Officer training was promoted to Lieutenant that same year. He continued in the role of Training Officer and was also appointed Finance and Administration Officer.
Promoted to Acting Lieutenant Commander in July 2003 he was appointed as Executive Officer HMNZS TOROA. On 28 June 2006 he was promoted to his current rank and appointed Commanding Officer of the Dunedin based Naval Reserve Division.
During his time with the Royal New Zealand Naval Volunteer Reserve he has served in HMNZ Ships KOURA, OTAGO, WAIKATO and MOA. Lieutenant Commander Walker was awarded the RNZNVR Long Service and Good Conduct Medal in 1983, the clasp to the RNZNVR LS&GCM in 1993 and the Volunteer Reserve Decoration (VRD) in 2008.
He is married to Barbara and they have four adult sons. In civilian life he is employed as a Harbour Control Officer by Port Otago Ltd at the Port Chalmers Container Terminal.
