September 2005 - PEGASUS: Volunteer Reservist wins top Junior Officer award

David Stanley-Boden of PEGASUS received the top Junior Officer award of his VRJOCT class in 2005

Ensign David Stanley-Boden is a Navy Volunteer Reservist based at HMNZS PEGASUS, in Montreal St., Christchurch. David recently completed his Volunteer Reserve Junior Officer Common Training (VRJOCT) and won the top Junior Officer award.

David was bought up in Christchurch. He attended Cashmere High School from 1997 to 2001. He now lives in St Albans. In his normal day-to-day life he is an apprentice electrician for Millennium Electrical, and is now in his final apprenticeship year.

David joined the Navy Volunteer Reserve in 2002 as a Weapons Electrical Fitter and changed to the Seaman Branch at the start of this year, when he also commissioned from the ranks and joined the course he has just completed. The VRJOCT was held at the Devonport Naval Base in Auckland, and covered many varied areas including sea survival, unarmed and sword drill, leadership exercises and practical evolutions.

David joined the Volunteer Reserve after a particularly enjoyable voyage onboard the SPIRIT OF NEW ZEALAND, where he realised how much he would like to continue doing this sort of activity and get paid for it!

During his time in the Volunteer Reserve, David has had many trips around the ports and coastlines of New Zealand. One particular highlight was a joint exercise with the Army Signallers around Banks Peninsula doing night missions in a rigid hulled inflatable boat (RHIB).

David also enjoyed being in Auckland on the Junior Officers' course. He says that the atmosphere was awesome and he met a lot of good people.
