September 2009 - VRX Continuation Training
In May 2009, NGAPONA’s VRX officers commenced navigation continuation training during the division’s monthly training weekends. This training has been aimed at those officers who have completed RF courses, but who need to refresh their knowledge in preparation for supplementation. The first weekend was in the classroom, going over general navigation and the International Regulations for Preventing Collisions at Sea (commonly known as the Rule of the Road).

In following weekends, we have been in the Bridge Simulator (as well as the classroom), combining pilotage with emergency drills, collision avoidance, and OOW Manouevres. The Simulator training has also been an excellent opportunity for our seaman junior ratings to practise Quartermaster/Bosun’s Mate and lookout duties, whilst building a cohesive bridge team.
The training in 2009 will culminate in a week in November, combining the RF ECPINs (electronic charting) course and RESERVEX 09, where the four reserve divisions come together to train collectively.
It is hoped that, having started with NGAPONA in 2009, that the training modules can be developed and sent to the other divisions in 2010, so that they too can keep their seaman officers skilled and motivated.
