2009 TOROA - Employer Support Awards

The Otago Southland regional Employer Support Council Chairman Mr Julian Smith has named the finalists and regional winners for the 2009 Employer Support Awards.

A reception held at the Kensington Army Hall on 3rd March 2010, the four finalists were named as;

        Navy - Stevenson and Williams Builders and Otago District Health Board.

        Army - Otago Business Equipment and Media works.

Otago Business Equipment was named regional winner.

Lieutenant Commander Bruce Walker, the commanding officer of HMNZS TOROA, addressing last night's reception said the support of employers was invaluable because without it Territorials and Naval Reservists would be unable to train. Employers were nominated by their employees.

Nomination for the Otago District Health Board (ODHB).

Over the previous years the ODHB has supported my time with the Naval Reserves by giving me leave as required for training without question. This year I had 6 months leave so that I could participate in NZ contribution towards the monitoring of the Korean War Armistice Agreement with the United Nations Command Military Armistice Commission. By the end of my posting I had spent over 8 months away from my civilian employment and despite requiring an additional 2 months of leave to complete my posting, the ODHB has always been fully supportive.

Nomination for Stevenson and Williams Builders Ltd.

I wish to nominate my employer Mr Warren Laing for the Employer of the Year award. As his employee he has supported me in giving me time off over the past 18 months to complete the training required to complete my goal in finishing my Able Seaman’s task book. Although I was not paid by my civilian employer during the time I undertook “on the job training”, without Mr Laing's support it would not have been possible. Over the past 18 months I have undertaken 5 weeks full time training, this has consisted of:

May 2008:                     HMNZS CANTERBURY (2 weeks)

November 2008:            RESERVEX08 (4 days)

July/ August 2009:         HMNZS RESOLUTION (2.5 weeks) sea time.
