I was privileged last week to be asked to help host a number of Christchurch personalities on HMNZS TAUPO and HMNZS PUKAKI on their voyage from Lyttelton to Akaroa on route to the French Fest celebrations.
The Commanding Officer, HMNZS PEGASUS, Lt Cdr Tim Elley hosted the contingent on HMNZS Pukaki. Guests included the Port Manager Lyttleton Port Company, Police Superintendent Canterbury, Vice President of the National RSA, the HMNZS CANTERBURY Scholarship Winner and a reserve recruit.
For someone whose last experience at sea was a day trip on HMNZS HINAU in the early 80’s, this was a huge revelation for me! I was so impressed with the IPV’s and their facilities onboard. Everybody made us feel very welcome, and we were encouraged to ask lots of questions and talk to the Ships Company.
Lunch was great, unfortunately I feed the fishes with mine shortly after we ate, obviously it was lucky I was never selected for sea going service!! As it wasn’t even slightly choppy!
The whole experience was awesome, and having now been onboard and seeing the IPV’s first hand, I feel much more comfortable about talking to potential recruits about their opportunities at sea and the Navy!!
