July 2009 - PEGASUS: Officer attends Staff Course in Canada

Every year the NZDF sends two Reserve Officers to the Canadian Forces Reserve Command and Staff Course. One each from the NZ Naval and Army Reserve.

For 2009 Major Tane Woodley and I were lucky enough to get selected. The course has 120 students (100 Canadians and 20 international students) broken into 12 classes, runs over 10 months and focuses on three pillars of learning: Command, Joint and Combined Warfare, and Networking. My class consisted of ten Canadian Regular and Reserve Officers, an Australian Squadron Leader and myself.

The first three terms take nine months in total and are completed by distance learning with assignments being submitted over an internet portal. The typical workload was eight hours of study plus a 250 word essay per week.

Term Four was a two week residential block and took place at the Canadian Staff College in Toronto, we were assessed on our previous course work, attended warfare briefings and discussions, completed a field trip to 3 Canadian battle fields of 1812 and undertook a campaign planning exercise called Tyro planner, which culminated in each class presenting their fictitious Operational Plan Commanders Briefing to a senior Canadian Staff Officer. Our brief was to Major General Dennis Tabbernor, the Director of Canadian Reserve Forces. A graduation ceremony and a great mess dinner completed the Course and early the next day our class broke up and we all made our way back to our homes.

On both a personal and professional level the course was highly rewarding; the distance learning was a long grind but the command, leadership and ethical foundations taught on course I have found extremely valuable, and the great diversity of character and experience held by my classmates, students and course staff was unbelievable; some good friendships have been made and I look forward to catching up with my classmates again in 2010 when I attend year two of JCSP.
