July 2009 - Leadership Training at Berwick Forest Camp

Berwick Forest Camp leadership Training
(The teams)

A successful Leadership weekend was conducted over the weekend of 24 - 26 July at the Berwick Forest Camp. A total of 30 personnel attended the camp which included a contingent of 10 from HMNZS Pegasus in Christchurch.

All personnel departed from TOROA at 1900 Friday evening and arrived at the camp at approx 1945. The camp is situated in the Berwick Forest and is about 50 km south of Dunedin.

On arrival accommodation was allocated, safety brief given and the weekend programme promulgated. The weekend was run strictly along Naval lines with daily Colours, Sunset, duty rosters, galley duties and cleaning stations. The daily programme consisted of a series of evolutions designed to build ability in individuals, develop leadership qualities and add competition between two teams. The teams competed for a trophy which was donated by the late Chief Petty Officer Brendon Swan a few years ago.

Teams were marked on all aspects of the weekend such as how they completed an evolution and in what time, drill, colours and sunset ceremony and also their performance at the social activity held on the Saturday evening. Not surprisingly when points were added up there was very little difference between the two teams.

The Leadership Weekend has now been conducted at Berwick Camp each July for 25 consecutive years and plays a very important role in preparing new entries for their Basic Common Training Course in Auckland it also serves to bring together our Division for a weekend of training and the opportunity to display the Navy Core Values.

The tyre wall is attempted as part of the confidence course that the teams had to master.
