On ANZAC Day the Ship’s Company of HMZNS NGAPONA paraded at the Memorial Wall at the Devonport Naval Base and the Civic Ceremonies held at Mt Maunganui. Many members of Ship’s Company then went on to other services at places including Pukekohe, Te Teko, Hamilton, Hakaru and Waiheke Island. One member of Ship’s Company paraded in Melbourne.
The Service of Remembrance at the Memorial Wall, HMNZS PHILOMEL, was presided over by Chaplain Bruce Thompson, and CDR Wayne Smith was the guest speaker. Also at the Service was Mr Vince McClone, a veteran of the Battle of the River Plate. Parading alongside the Ship’s Company were the Old Salts of NGAPONA and a large platoon of BBTs who performed the Navy Haka to demonstrate respect for the fallen. The Corps of Pipes and Drums provided a fitting musical backdrop to the Service.
NGAPONA’s resident Chaplain Haines presided over the Dawn Service at the Mount Maunganui and a platoon of Tauranga Sub Unit personnel marched alongside members of the Returned Serviceman’s Association and veterans. Recently promoted and married POMTO Frost attended the Dawn Service before driving up to Auckland to catch his honeymoon cruise with his wife.
