April 2011: Local Man Helps out in Christchurch
Whakatane man, Mark Pilcher jumped at the chance to assist the people of Christchurch and make a difference when he was recently offered the chance as a member of the Royal New Zealand Naval Volunteer Reserve.
Mark, who holds the rank of Petty Officer Electronics Technician, has been a member of the Volunteer Reserve for a couple of years after serving in the regular force for seven years. He re-enlisted after missing the camaraderie and pride of military service.
Mark is employed as an Electrical Instrumentation Technician by Whakatane Mill Limited who were happy to support his participation in the Christchurch recovery mission.
Mark was based on the cordon around the CBD during his time in Christchurch. This has primarily involved liaising with the Emergency Operations Centre and assisting with the facilitation of the other Naval Personnel manning the cordon.
The nature of the work was a bit chaotic, but Mark has been very impressed by the calibre and tireless commitment of the Police in Christchurch.
