Nov 2012 Navy Reservists put through their paces.

Engineers, electricians, lawyers and teachers were among 60 Royal New Zealand Naval Volunteer Reserve personnel who faced a range of challenges during their annual training exercise out of Devonport Naval Base.

RESERVEX 2012, held at the base from 21 to 25 November, was designed to give Navy Volunteer Reservists the opportunity to develop and practice a range of core skills in their military areas of expertise.

RNZNVR units from Auckland, Tauranga, Wellington, Christchurch and Dunedin took part in the exercise, which covered Seamanship, Bridge Watch Keeping, Electrical, Electronic, Mechanical and Weapons Engineering and Maritime Trade Operations Branch training.

Naval Volunteer Reservist and Officer in Charge of the exercise Lieutenant Commander Gerad Chaplin said RESERVEX enabled the upskilling and assessment of all components of the Naval Reserve in its operational capability.

“Personnel carried out practical and simulator training during the week and a selection of employers got to see the valuable contribution Naval Reservists make to the New Zealand Defence Force.

“The range of occupations and skills Navy Volunteer Reservists bring from their civilian jobs is invaluable to NZDF operations, and in turn, the skills learned in the military are valued by their employers.”

Personnel trained on RNZN ships including the multirole vessel HMNZS CANTERBURY, Offshore Patrol Vessel HMNZS WELLINGTON and Inshore Patrol Craft HMNZS ROTOITI, as well as on the Navy’s Rigid Hull Inflatable Boats.

Navy Volunteer Reservists are part time members of the military who, in addition to their civilian employment, have a parallel career in the NZ Defence Force as a member of the Navy.

The Reserve Forces of the New Zealand Defence Force are made up of the RNZNVR, the Territorial Force of the NZ Army and the Territorial Air Force. Currently there are over 2000 Reserve personnel serving in the NZDF.

In recent years Naval Volunteer Reservists have deployed on NZDF operations around the world, from the Antarctic to Korea and Sudan to Timor-Leste, as well as making great contributions to local Civil Defence and Emergency Management responses for the Christchurch Earthquakes and the RENA grounding.
