Base Library

Base Librarian at her desk

The Base Library at HMNZS PHILOMEL has been in existence in various forms since 1943.  That it has operated for over 60 years makes it one of the older libraries on the North Shore. It was originally started as a depot library to supply the ships and observation posts in the Auckland area during World War II. In the following years the library moved several times, and it has expanded and extended the services that it provides to the Naval Community.

The Base Library is located just inside the Main Gate, and is open from Monday to Friday from 0800 to 1615. The Library is basically a mini public library with all the facilities that you would expect to find. The book stock is continuously updated and we also have subscriptions to a number of professional journals. As a Naval Base Library, the emphasis of the non-fiction books is on Naval history and development. We also supply most of the ships with onboard libraries.

Two qualified librarians staff the Library.

Enquiries are welcome.
