Education and Benefits
As a Musician in the Navy Band you will be provided with:
- Instruments
- Mouth Pieces/Ligatures
- Reeds, Cork Grease, etc
- Uniform

Lessons
The Band pays for players to have private lessons. You may choose a suitably qualified private tutor. Lessons may be in afternoon work time, providing they fit in with the Band's schedule.
University
Once you have been in the Band for one year you can apply to attend part-time courses at recognised tertiary establishments. Approved courses are at Massey University or the University of Auckland and Polytech courses are also available. The Navy will pay funds towards your studies, however this incentive will only be paid if you pass the course.
Other Facilities
In the Navy you will be encouraged to maintain good health and fitness. There are several sport and fitness facilities at Devonport Naval Base. There is also a wide variety of Sports Clubs. The Adventure Training Centre offers exciting land and sea expeditions for those who want to extend their activities beyond general fitness and sports.
The Naval Chaplaincy and Te Taua Moana Marae provide spiritual and cultural facilities and support to the Naval community. The Naval Community Organisation has children's daycare centres, housing and family support for those who qualify. There is even a well-stocked library.
Some holiday motel accommodation is also available, and there is a wide range of amenities for hire to Navy personnel.
The Navy offers medical and dental care to uniformed personnel.
There are superannuation schemes available.
