Frequently asked questions
There are a lot of myths and stories about working for the Navy Band. Here are some of the questions we are asked. If you still have a question after reading these and looking at our site, please contact us.
What is the deal with hair?
Males:
Men's hair is not to be shorter than a number one comb without permission. You cannot have exaggerated hairstyles, for example Mohawks or partially shaven heads. Colouring must be a natural shade. If worn, sideburns are to be neatly trimmed and to run parallel with the ear, extending no further than the bottom of the earlobe. Permission is required to grow a beard, and it must be kept neat and clean - moustaches are not to be worn without a beard, and you may not have a 'goatie'.
Females:
Women are to wear long hair in a bun, French roll, French or normal plait when in working rig. Short hair is not to extend below the lower edge of the collar. Hair clips, elastic bands or bun nets used to secure long hair must be of a hair-like colour. Colouring of a natural hue is permitted.
Return to topWhat about weekends?
We do work some weekends and evenings. If they happen to fall on a statutory holiday we receive an equivalent day, which gets added to our leave, and we are credited time off for weekends worked.
Return to topWhat is a normal working day?
The band generally works from 8 am to 4 pm, Monday to Friday. But this can change due to some evening and weekend commitments.
Return to topWhat are the minimum fitness requirements?
You will have to run the 'beep test' to the level of 7.1. On completion of this, you must do 10 strict form full press ups.The Navy also requires all trainees to undergo two swim tests. The candidate must swim 50 metres, and on completion remain afloat (unaided) by treading water for three minutes.
Return to topWhat are some of the benefits the Navy provides?
The Navy provides free medical and dental care to all Regular Force Personnel. The Navy also makes provision for accommodation assistance, tertiary education, fitness facilities, sports facilities, financial assistance and amenities.
Return to topDo you travel?
The band does travel, mostly within New Zealand, but we do have the occasional overseas trip. The longer trips are generally anywhere between 2 - 3 weeks. This doesn't occur very often during the year.
Return to topCan I wear jewellery?
Males can wear one signet ring and a wedding ring.
Females can wear one signet ring, one engagement ring, one eternity ring and a wedding ring. One plain gold or silver stud/sleeper in each ear is allowed.
