AMUS Sarah Hay

Qualifications: BMusHons, LTCL in Performance Flute

Sarah began learning the flute at age 8. Since then she has performed extensively both solo and in various orchestral and band ensembles and gained both Grade 8 and Performers Certificate with distinction by age 17.

Sarah completed her Bachelor of Music with honours in performance Flute at the University of Auckland, under the skilled tutorledge of Catherine Bowie, Uwe Grodd and current teacher Ingrid Culliford.  She also holds an LTCL Diploma which she gained with the highest marks for any instrument within New Zealand.

Sarah is involved with a wide range of musical activities, both within the university and the wider Auckland community, including extensive early music studies and performance studies on the one keyed Baroque flute.  She is a member of the Auckland Youth Symphony Orchestra and the Waitakere City Symphony Orchestra and has performed with Professional New Zealand musical ensembles Manukau City Symphony Orchestra, New Zealand Korean Symphony Orchestra and Pipers Synfonia on Baroque flute.

Sarah was the winner of the Connie Nelson Memorial Trophy and Scholarship at the Te Awamutu National Music Competition and is also very involved with music education, holding an itinerant music teacher position at Michael Park School up until 2007.

Sarah joined the Navy Band in February 2007 after encouragement from Oliver, a current band member on Trumpet.  She continues to teach privately and enjoys playing music full time, travelling and furthering her musical skills.

Sarah’s other interests are rock climbing, surfing, cycling, touch rugby, reading, and photography.
