POMUS Jo Spiers

Instrument: Trumpet

PO Jo Spiers started out, like quite a few trumpet players in this country, as a cornet player in a brass band. Through the late 70's she progressed, naturally, to trumpet and joined the band of the RNZN for the first time in 1978. Jo was the second woman to join the Navy Band.

In the 1980’s Jo worked freelance and performed with many artists, such as the Bolshoi Ballet, Saddler Wells Ballet Co., Four Tops and Temptations. There was also a lot of work for TVNZ, Radio NZ and musicals at the Mercury Theatre. When she’s not at work with the Navy Band, Jo performs with the Rodger Fox Big Band, backing various international musicians and vocalists, as well as local artists such as Midge Marsden, Frankie Stevens and Ray Woolf.

Jo spends her spare time being a grandma and fishing.
