Training Partnership Agreement with Mahurangi Technical Institute.
The Navy has teamed up with an education provider which specialises in delivering commercial maritime training packages. Mahurangi Technical Institute (MTI) is based in Warkworth, 60km north of Devonport, and provides a range of programmes that suit Naval personnel. One of the most innovative allows Navy Bridge-Watchkeepers to gain civilian accreditation towards a National Certificate in Maritime by performing on-the-job tasks and assessments at sea. This also allows our people to sit for Maritime NZ commercial licences; so far several Navy people have completed the programme and gained both NZ Offshore Watchkeeper and NZ Offshore Master tickets.
The partnership with MTI also allows us flexibility in providing training for Inshore Launchmaster licences and Boatmaster certificates to our career course students. All these programmes allow our people to gain a broader insight into the wider maritime sphere in which we operate whilst gaining credit for their Naval training. We are pleased to be associated with this high-quality training provider and will be seeking ways to enhance our partnering arrangement so that Naval personnel can benefit further.
