The Vision of the Navy Trade Training School is embodied in the following statements:

* The Navy Trade Training School will be recognised as the Navy's primary individual trade training organisation.
* The Navy Trade Training School will have a reputation for producing resourceful, self-assured and competent Marine Engineering personnel.
* The Navy Trade Training School will be recognised as a primary source of Engineering Trade Training throughout the New Zealand Defence Forces and protectorates and those countries involved in New Zealand's Mutual Aid Programme.

With a staff of ten instructors and three support staff, the Trade Training School is responsible for teaching skill of hand to Defence personnel in four areas:

* Machine Shop;
* Maintenance & Diagnostics;
* Welding & Fabrication Shop; and
* Hydraulics Unit.

In any one academic year the Trade Training School teaches up to 300 individual students on one of 30 different courses.
All courses taught at the Trade Training School are based on NZQA Unit Standards and gain credits towards civilian qualifications.

Each course is based on the requirements identified by the Technical Branch Development Team and designed around the Unit Standards that make up the Level 4 Maintenance and Diagnostic Qualification. The number of students on courses can vary, but approximately 300 students are taught each year.
