JULY 2010 - CANTERBURY delivers to Tuvalu

Over the last two week’s CANTERBURY has been deployed to the islands of Funafuti, Vaitapu and Nukufetau in the Tuvalu Islands on Operation Tropic Twilight 2010.  The operation is designed to test the Defence Force’s ability to respond to a major tropical disaster, such as a cyclone.

During the deployment CANTERBURY embarked 156 personnel, including eleven personnel from the French Armed forces (FANC) who operated their PUMA helicopter from the flight deck.

The PUMA helicopter and the ship’s two Landing Craft were used to move cargo from the ship to shore.  On a typical day the PUMA made up to 24 logistic lifts, and operated for up to 5 hours.  On coral atolls and small islands a large ship like CANTERBURY is unable to dock, and the only way to transport cargo is by helicopter or landing craft.

As well as delivering cargo, CANTERBURY used her onboard facilities to provide fresh meals and accommodation for personnel working and living onshore.  Being able to use CANTERBURY’s facilities provides respite from the high temperatures and tent facilities used by onshore personnel.

During the operation CANTERBURY also hosted functions for local dignitaries and personnel from the operation.  This was a successful opportunity for local people and military personnel to meet in an informal environment.
